Biologia reprodutiva de três espécies simpátricas de peixes neotropicais: Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae), Leporinus amblyrhynchus Garavello & Britski e Schizodon nasutus Kner (Characiformes, Anostomidae) do recém-formado Reservatório de Miranda, Alto Paraná Zoologia
Vono,Volney; Silva,Luiz Gustavo M.; Maia,Bruno P.; Godinho,Hugo P..
The reproductive activity parameters of the teleosts Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803, Leporinus amblyrhynchus Garavello & Britski, 1987 and Schizodon nasutus Kner, 1859 was evaluated at a newly formed reservoir in the Araguari River, Paraná River basin, Southeast Brazil. The fishes were captured by gill nets bimonthly from November 1997 to November 1998 at three sampling stations. The stages of gonad development were identified macroscopically in the field and then confirmed by histological analysis in the laboratory. The females of all species reached larger standard length than the males. Pimelodus maculatus in reproductive activity were captured only in November, 1997 and January, 1998 whereas L. amblyrhynchus and S. nasutus were in activity...

Climate change impacts on fish reproduction are mediated at multiple levels of the brain-pituitary-gonad axis ArchiMer
Servili, Arianna; Canario, Adelino V.m.; Mouchel, Olivier; Muñoz-cueto, José Antonio.
Anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have generated rapid variations in atmospheric composition which drives major climate changes. Climate change related effects include changes in physico-chemical proprieties of sea and freshwater, such as variations in water temperature, salinity, pH/PCO2 and oxygen content, which can impact fish critical physiological functions including reproduction. In this context, the main aim of the present review is to discuss how climate change related effects (variation in water temperature and salinity, increases in duration and frequency of hypoxia events, water acidification) would impact reproduction by affecting the neuroendocrine axis (brain-pituitary-gonad axis). Variations in temperature and...

Egg surface structure of the freshwater toadfish Thalassophryne amazonica (Teleostei: Batrachoididae) with information on its distribution and natural habitat Neotropical Ichthyology
Britz,Ralf; Toledo-Piza,Mônica.
The egg surface structure of Thalassophryne amazonica, a freshwater toadfish from the Amazon basin is described. Eggs of this species show a remarkable, highly unusual system of parallel ridges and intermittent grooves that originate at the equator of the egg and lead to the micropylar pit, at which they end in a spiralling pattern. A similar egg surface structure has so far been described only from a group of Asian anabantoid percomorphs, obviously not closely related to Thalassophryne. This egg surface pattern may enhance fertilization success by guiding sperm to the micropyle. We review museum records for T. amazonica, present an updated map of its occurrence in the Amazon basin, and provide information on its habitat.

Indicadores reprodutivos das espécies de Citharichthys Bleeker (Teleostei, Pleuronectiformes) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso C; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
The species of Citharichthys Bleeker, 1862, C. arenaceus Evermann & Marsh, 1900 and C. spilopterus Günther, 1862, are the most common flatfishes found in Guaratuba Bay, south Brazil. Different size categories of these flatfish occur in the mangrove area throughout the year. The Gonadosomatic Index, the Condition Factor, and the morphological analyses of the gonads from samples obtained between 1994 and 1996 reveals a spawning activity during late Spring and early Summer. This period coincides with the increase in temperature and decrease in salinity. Spawning evidence and the presence of ali size categories throughout the year indicate that Citharichthys spp. are permanent inhabitants of the mangrove in Guaratuba Bay, where they complete their life...

Morphology of the urogenital papilla and its component ducts in Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski, 2000 (Characiformes: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Siqueira-Silva,Diógenes Henrique de; Silva,Amanda Pereira dos Santos; Ninhaus-Silveira,Alexandre; Veríssimo-Silveira,Rosicleire.
The histological description of the urogenital papilla is an important tool to comprehension of the reproductive mechanisms in fish, as well as a pre-requisite to germ cell transplantation in adult fish, besides to be a good biological indicator to environmental changes. Was performed the histological description of the urogenital papilla and its component ducts in the tetra Astyanax altiparanae. The genital and urinay ducts pass separately throughout most part of its extension, joining in a single duct before opening. In males this opening is asymmetric and seems to have double origin, being completely surrounded by striated muscle fibers, while in females it is symmetric and the muscle fibers does not surround it totally. Spermatic duct and oviduct...

Ovary maturation stages and oocyte features in three species of the neotropical fish Hemiodus (Müller, 1842) BABT
Brandão,Claudia Angelica da Silva; Valentim,Maria de Fátima Moraes; Caramaschi,Érica Pellegrini.
Macro- and microscopic ovarian features of Hemiodus microlepis, H. ternetzi and H. unimaculatus were analyzed. Based on these features we proposed an ovarian maturation scale. The nine stages of the preliminary macroscopic fieldwork scale were reduced to five after microscopic analysis of ovaries. The microscopic analysis indicated a group-synchronous oocyte development common to the three species that were characterized as iteroparous synchronous spawners with a total spawning type. The remarkable thickness of the zona radiata layer and the large size of vitellogenic oocytes of Hemiodus ternetzi distinguished this species from the others.

Predicting size at first sexual maturity from length/weight relationship: a case study with an Amazonian catfish Neotropical Ichthyology
Freitas,Tiago Magalhães da Silva; Almeida,Vitor Hudson da Consolação; Montag,Luciano Fogaça de Assis; Fontoura,Nelson Ferreira.
ABSTRACT Relationship between length and weight (LWR) is used to describe aspects concerning the life cycle of fish, but does not considers possible changes during the lifetime mainly due to the sexual maturation. Thus, this study aims to identify the size at first maturity of Auchenipterichthys longimanus (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) and infer if the reproductive engagement could change growth pattern, concerning the LWR. Estimates of the size at first maturity (L 50 ) were made by visual identification of gonadal development and through the gonadosomatic index (G SI ). L 50 was estimated as 12.5 cm for males and 13.0 cm for females when applied visual identification of gonads development. L 50 estimates increased to 13.05 cm for males and 13.7 cm...

Reprodução de Stellifer rastrifer (Jordan) (Teleostei, Sciaenidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
A total of 1312 individuais of S. rastrifer were sampled from March 1994 to September 1996 at the Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazilian coast. This species is a permanently inhabitant of the mangrove area throughout the year. The weight/length relationship of the species in the region is "In TW =-12,35 + 3,22 In TL", and the individuais may reach 172mm of total length. The analyses of gonadal morphology and gonadossomatic index indicate that S. rastrifer is a multiple spawner species, that reproduces at the mangrove area during a long period of the year. The reproductive activity is more intense during the winter and mainly the spring, when the value of Condition Factor declines and empty folheies are found in the ovaries.

Reproductive plasticity of Hypostomus affinis (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) as a mechanism to adapt to a reservoir with poor habitat complexity Rev. Bras. Zool.
Duarte,Silvana; Araújo,Francisco Gerson; Bazzoli,Nilo.
In this work we describe the gonad morphology and spawning season of Hypostomus affinis (Steindachner, 1877) in a tropical reservoir based on 55 males and 125 females. Our aim was to assess eventual adaptations in reproductive tactics developed by this riverine species inhabiting an oligotrophic reservoir with low habitat complexity, few rocks and few other preferred consolidated substrata. We described the stages of cells of reproductive lineage, gonadal development and some reproductive traits which were compared with information in the available literature. Cells from the spermatogenic lineage were spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa, and cells from the oocytarian lineage were primary oocytes, previtelogenic oocytes, cortical...

Surubim-do-Paraíba oocytes viability after being exposed to different cryoprotectants Ciência Rural
Lopes,Taís da Silva; Sanches,Eduardo Antônio; Caneppele,Danilo; Romagosa,Elizabeth.
ABSTRACT: To know the non-toxic cryoprotectants to fish oocytes is of extreme importance for tests that aim to increase oocyte resistance to cold, thus allowing more advanced studies in cryopreservation. Therefore, commonly used cryoprotectants such as methanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, sucrose and fructose were studied. Immature oocytes from the initial to vitelogenic (diameter <1.7 mm) and mature (diameter >1.8 mm) stages of Steindachneridion parahybae were evaluated. Four distinct experiments were performed, three using immature oocytes and one using oocytes at the mature stage. For each oocyte stage, the best maintenance solution to be used: Hank or 50% L15 and; viability after baths for 30min (room temperature) at...

X-Linked Retinitis Pigmentosa 2 Is a Novel Maternal-Effect Gene Required for Left-Right Asymmetry in Zebrafish ArchiMer
Desvignes, Thomas; Nguyen, Thaovi; Chesnel, Franck; Bouleau, Aurelien; Fauvel, Christian; Bobe, Julien.
Retinitis pigmentosa 2 (RP2) gene is responsible for up to 20% of X-linked retinitis pigmentosa, a severe heterogeneous genetic disorder resulting in progressive retinal degeneration in humans. In vertebrates, several bodies of evidence have clearly established the role of Rp2 protein in cilia genesis and/or function. Unexpectedly, some observations in zebrafish have suggested the oocyte-predominant expression of the rp2 gene, a typical feature of maternal-effect genes. In the present study, we investigate the maternal inheritance of rp2 gene products in zebrafish eggs in order to address whether rp2 could be a novel maternal-effect gene required for normal development. Although both rp2 mRNA and corresponding protein are expressed during oogenesis, rp2...
